Below, please find the answers to some commonly-asked questions about acupuncture. If you have additional questions, please don’t hesitate to
What kind of needles are used? Are they sterile?
Every needle used is a sterile, single-use needle that is discarded after use. The needles used are very thin, like the width of a piece of hair.
Does Acupuncture hurt?
No, however the practitioner will want the patient to feel some sensations. There are sensations that the acupuncturist will try to illicit and look for, to make sure that the needles are doing their work (moving the qi). These sensations are usually described as heavy, moving or pulsing.
What can I expect when going in for a treatment?
During the first session, there will be an intake where the acupuncturist will go over your forms, and ask questions to get a full picture of what is going on. Your pulse will be felt and we will look at your tongue, as this gives us better information about what is happening on the inside. A treatment plan is then constructed with what acupuncture points and treatment modalities will be used to handle the issue. Once the needles are in, the acupuncturist will step out of the room and let you relax, while the needles do their work. The acupuncturist will then return to remove the needles and see how you feel. The session will end discussing possible recommendations for you (dietary, exercises, meditations) to work on in your own time.
Do you accept insurance?
I am an out of network provider with most major medical insurance plans. We will verify your insurance coverage to see if acupuncture is covered out of network. Most flexible spending plans also cover acupuncture. If your plan does not cover acupuncture out of network, I offer a discounted direct payment rate.
Does acupuncture work?
Yes. It is an ancient healing modality that has stood the test of time. There have been many studies done on the efficacy of acupuncture. The best example of it working would be for you to come in and see from your own experience. Listen to what your body tells you after a treatment and go from there.
What do I wear during a session?
We recommend that each patient bring comfortable shorts and a tank top to change into, so that we are able to get to the necessary parts of the body with ease. If one does not bring a change of clothing, don't worry as we provide drapes for your comfort.
How many treatments will I need?
This depends on what the health issue is. If there is an acute problem, this may be resolved in a few treatments. If someone comes in with a chronic issue, this problem may take more treatments to be resolved, or maintenance treatments may be needed (perhaps once a month) in order for the issue to remain in check.
